Italian Painter, 1494-1557 Francesco Bacchiacca (1494 - 1557) was a Italian painter of the Renaissance whose work is characteristic of the Florentine Mannerist style. Bacchiacca was born in Borgo San Lorenzo, near Florence. He was also known as Bachiacca or Bacchiacca, Francesco d'Ubertino Verdi or Francesco Ubertini. He initially was a craftsman in an atelier of possibly Pietro Perugino. In 1523, he participated with Franciabigio and Jacopo Pontormo in the decoration of the camera of Giovanni Benintendi. He mainly worked in small cabinet pieces, or designs for tapestries. Italian Baroque Era Painter, 1665-1747 Painter, draughtsman and printmaker. His religious and mythological works are distinguished by a free brushstroke and a painterly manner. He also painted spirited genre scenes, which by their quality, content and quantity distinguish him as one of the first Italian painters of high standing to devote serious attention to the depiction of contemporary life. Such paintings as Woman Laundering (1700-05; St Petersburg, Hermitage) or Woman Washing Dishes (1720-25; Florence, Uffizi) offer straightforward glimpses of domestic chores in images that are startlingly novel for the period and look forward to the art of Jean-Simeon Chardin, Jean-Francois Millet and Honore Daumier.
Joseph-Desire Court
a painter of historical subjects and portraits, was born at Rouen in 1797. He became a pupil at the École des Beaux-Arts under Gros, and after carrying off the principal honours there pursued his studies still further at Rome. High expectations were formed of him when he exhibited in 1827 'The Death of Caesar,' a work manifesting earnest thought, and a conscientious handling of the facts of history. This is now preserved in the Louvre. Having shown himself in this and other works a vigorous painter, capable of seizing a subject with a masterly grasp, and having also in the region of portrait painting proved himself an artist of no common merit, he eventually dissipated his talents in the production of a series of empty official pictures painted by order of Louis Philippe.
